Eugene Johnson, ’76

Eugene Johnson built a successful career in senior healthcare administration off an early foundation as an EMT, paramedic, and nurse, “never straying far from his roots,” in the words of a career mentor, in his dedication to the provider side of healthcare.

Gene served in Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer roles in Philadelphia-area hospital systems until 2011, when a doctor who had worked with him in emergency department roles before founding Team Health recruited him into the company. As Team Health grew to more than 20,000 clinicians nationwide, Gene advanced within the organization, retiring as Market Executive Vice President for their Northeast Group. At his 2026 retirement, he was honored for his exemplification of leadership, service, and dedication, including active support of Team Health’s Veterans Resource Group, a cause close to his heart as a captain in the Air Force Reserves.

A devoted and loyal alumnus of his Niagara undergraduate alma mater, Gene was honored by the university with its Dunleavy award in 2025, recognizing his adult-life commitment – capped with his establishment of the Rosemary Bartenstein Nursing and Military Service Endowed Scholarship, awarded to non-scholarship ROTC students in a nursing Program who are military veterans, children of veterans, or have made a commitment to military service.
